Hello and welcome to another episode of slowpoke divas TV I'm your host Bonnie. Parish cow walking is one of the best ways to improve your fitness and to lose weight but there are two specific styles of walking that not only will ramp up those efforts but also will stoke your competitive spirit as well if you've been following me at slowpoke divas calm or on any of my social media channels. You know that I race walk all of my running races and including the run portions of my triathlons and that's because race walking is easier on my body it's a low-impact sport while it still provides one heck of a workout now recently a friend of mine had asked me what what is this thing called race. Walking what is this thing that I'm now hearing about. Power walking and how does that house that difference different it from something called Fitness walking well that's a really great question I can understand why people would be confused and that's why we're having this video today just. Show you the differences between race walking and power walking that you can use as a competitive sport but first my definition of fitness walking this is when you just lace up your shoes and you get out the door whether you're gonna walk in your neighborhood you go. To a local park or a trail and you're walking for a specific period of time ten minutes fifteen minutes a half-hour maybe at varying speeds but the whole goal. Is just to get you out and get moving you may or may not lose weight but over time you will become fitter now when we talk about race walking and power walking we're really talking. About two competitive sports race walking has. Been around since the early 1900's were first appear in the 1904 Olympics power walking is now a new sport as that is being seen across the United States primarily at senior games or Senior Olympics but power walking because it lacks a specific technical detail that racewalking has it's much more. Open and accessible to people. Of all ages all abilities now let's take a look at how they are. Defined by two of the sports governing bodies according to USA Track & Field racewalking requires the competitor to maintain contact with the ground at all. Times and requires the leading leg to be straightened as the foot makes contact. With the ground it must remain straightened until the leg passes under the body according to the United States power walking Association power walking rules state that one foot must be on the ground at all times and. In a heel to toe foot strike action the forward leg may be bent at the knee so let's take a look at race walking. And power walking in action. To do that I asked Mary Ann and Doug Hamilton from the United States power walking Association. To demonstrate two styles of competitive walking now Mary Ann is an age group champion race walker who's competed internationally and she still does to this day the Doug. He recently moved from race walking to power walking first let's take a look at Mary Ann and how she race walks - look at how straight Mary Ann keeps her for Lake at all times this videos being shown a half urn normal race pace now take a closer look at how her forward Lake always stays. Straight until it passes underneath her body then as her heel strikes the track her leg is straight that's racewalking take a look at Marianne as. She is racewalking at her normal race pace so that's race walking now let's. Take a look at power walking Doug is showing as power walking shown here at about a third of his usual pace notice he always has one foot on the ground just like Marianne did in this frame by frame. View you can see how Doug's forward right. Leg is bent at the knee then his left leg appears to be bent but then it straightens when. His heel hits the track that's okay and power walking here is Doug Parra walking at his full ray speed okay so we just saw racewalking and. We just saw power walking what did they look like almost side-by-side take a close look at how Doug and Marianne are walking you did you catch those differences don't worry if you don't because. It is it can take time to become familiar with the forms of both sports if you enter a competition there will be judges on the course and in most cases they will give you a warning a verbal warning like a straighten your leg out if you're. Doing race walking or if your power walking and maybe they think you're running or this creeping or jogging thing they'll they'll call it. Out to you in many cases the judges are helping competitors like us regular people to do a better job when the competition gets higher up in intensity a lot of times that you're not gonna get those breaks you'll get yellow cards and then when you get enough red cards you're been disqualified. So this is why it's important to understand the differences between the two forms and then practice practice practice believe me I'm still practicing my race walking exact thing I will be all for forever and ever until I to make the switchover to power walking use the technical sport of race walking or the more accommodating sport of power walking either. Way you're gonna have a great time challenging yourself in a race to do the best that you can if you win a medal so much. Better but the thing is about whether it is race walking or power walking. You're getting out there and challenging yourself to be the best you can be at that moment in time so I do want give a big shout out. Big thank you to Mary Ann and Doug Hamilton of. The United States power walking Association without their help wouldn't been able to.
